Happy MLK Day! (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr—an inspiration to MJ.)

Updated: May 1

"If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. Start with the man in the mirror. Start with yourself. Don’t be looking at all the other things. Start with you. That’s the truth. That’s what Martin Luther King meant and Gandhi too. That’s what I believe."
~ Michael Jackson (excerpt from MJ's autobiography, "Moonwalk.")

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was an inspiration to Michael. Many times, Michael cited the great civil rights leader in his work—such as including an excerpt of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech on his song titled, HIStory—and his mention of Dr. King in his still relevant socially conscious piece: "They Don't Care About us."

(Peep the 2020 revised version of the short film, "They Don't Care About Us," directed by the iconic Spike Lee (director of both the original 1996 Brazil and Prison versions).

The more you know:

Mr. Michael Jackson was a well-read man who owned 21 books on civil rights and black history. Titles included biographies of Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X. (The information about MJs book collection and titles is via Julian's auction.)

Please Note: This is a repost from last year, but I wanted to share it again. Things are super busy on my end, but I hope all are doing well in this new year. I know many of us to have a lot of pressures on us, and these past few years have been extremely tough—but please, remember to be kind to one another. Sometimes, even a friendly smile or a nice word can make all the difference in someone's world.

Blessings,
